Colleagues again nominate Rep Jim Jordan to be U.S. House Speaker

After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Trump refused to concede while making claims of election fraud, Jordan supported lawsuits to invalidate the election results and voted not to certify the Electoral College results. Jordan was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus in 2015, and served as its first chairman from 2015 to 2017. Led by Jordan, the conservative members of the caucus pushed for a motion to "vacate the chair" against then-Speaker John Boehner, the same move that ultimately ousted former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his speakership. Before any vote could take place, Boehner announced his resignation in September 2015. As the current chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jordan has been his caucus' chief investigator of Biden and his family, running probes into both the president and his son Hunter Biden. His panel was also among the three congressional committees McCarthy tasked with opening an impeachment inquiry into the president.

Will Jim Jordan or Steve Scalise — or even Kevin McCarthy — be the next speaker of the House?.

The committee said that on Jan. 2, 2021, Jordan led a conference call in which he and other members of Congress discussed with Trump strategies to delay the joint session on Jan. 6 to certify the electoral votes solidifying Joe Biden's victory. Jordan has served in the House since 2007 and has held several leadership roles, including chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and ranking member on both the House Oversight and Judiciary committees. Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine. Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives.

Scalise will not run for speaker again

Twenty-five Republicans opposed him in a third vote, putting him even further from the speakership. When McCarthy negotiated himself into the speakership earlier this year, one of his key concessions was allowing any House member to file a motion to vacate, or remove him from speaker. Representative Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida, filed such a motion earlier this month and enough Republicans – eight in total – voted against McCarthy to oust him.

"We knew of no abuse. Never heard of abuse. If we had, we would have reported it," Jordan said in 2018 when the ex-wrestlers claimed he was aware. Two former university wrestlers, Mike DiSabato and Dunyasha Yetts, claimed Jordan was aware of allegations that a now-dead team doctor was abusing athletes. Jordan has repeatedly denied any knowledge of the abuse, and Jordan himself has never been accused of sexual misconduct.

Spartz drew headlines earlier this year when she voted “present” multiple times during the long process to elect McCarthy as Speaker. The U.S. House remained without a speaker Tuesday afternoon as about 20 Republicans, including Indiana's Victoria Spartz, voted for candidates other than GOP nominee Jim Jordan of Ohio. The United States is divided into 435 congressional districts, each with a population of about 710,000 individuals. Each district elects a representative to the House of Representatives for a two-year term. Americans in the United States’s six territories are represented in the House of Representatives by an additional six non-voting delegates. As members of Congress voted for a second time, most Republicans - including Jordan - cast ballots for McCarthy with a handful backing Jordan.

Jordan excelled as a high-school wrestler, winning the Ohio state championships four times. Jordan is a fiscal conservative who believes that families and taxpayers, rather than government, know best how to make decisions with their money. Throughout his career, Jim Jordan has led the fight against tax hikes, including those proposed by his own political party.

Duarte and Garcia’s races are considered “toss-ups,” Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog, noted on Friday. Cook rates Valadao and Steel’s races as leaning Republican, and Kim’s as likely to go Republican. He built his brand on being a roaring archconservative unafraid to take on liberals. He was a pioneer of this new right-wing faction that has become the face of the Republican Party.

One might say it indicates their true loyalties, in spite of all those nice ribbon-cuttings and the “we’re here to help” images they like to portray. After Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy as speaker, Patrick McHenry, a North Carolina Republican, became the speaker pro tempore. McCarthy chose McHenry to take on that role should the speakership ever be declared vacant. Even as it was clear that Jordan had no clear path to becoming the speaker, no Republican emerged to seriously challenge him. Republicans currently have a Sunday noon deadline to announce their candidacy ahead of another round of speakership talks.

In 2018, former wrestlers he coached at Ohio State University accused him of having failed to stop the team's doctor from molesting them and other students. Jordan, who was the university's assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994, has repeatedly said he knew nothing of the abuse until former students began speaking out. WASHINGTON — Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is the only candidate in the race for House speaker, but he's still struggling to win over enough support from rank-and-file Republicans to get elected in a formal floor vote. On Jan. 3, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy became the first candidate in the majority party to lose a bid for the House speakership in 100 years. He won the gavel in the 15th round of voting, making his election the longest since before the Civil War. On Monday night, Spartz released a statement expressing concerns about Jordan’s leadership and if the Ohio Republican would adopt what she called “intimidation” tactics used by McCarthy to gain speaker votes.

Garcia is the only one of the five Californians in question who voted against certifying some election results. Valadao has said in statements that he backed Jordan “because we need to get back to work” and that he would support a plan to empower McHenry. House Republicans have struggled to pick a leader since eight Republicans on Oct. 3 led a vote, joined by Democrats, to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield from the speaker’s chair. The new speaker will take over as Congress faces numerous crises both domestically and abroad. Funding for federal agencies extends only through Nov. 17, and lawmakers will have to act to avert a government shutdown.

If they can show they backed Jordan for practical reasons, voters may excuse their support for him. Republican voters have become more likely to hold their own party accountable for the chaos in Washington. On Sept. 11, 32% of Republicans polled said they would blame their party most ifthe government were to shut down.

Jordan said earlier that voting would continue "until we get a speaker." He and his allies had hoped to wrap up the process by the end of the day to avoid a marathon of votes like those required to elect McCarthy in January. That election took 15 rounds of voting over four days before he was finally elected. The first order of House business as the 118th Congress convenes is the selection of a new speaker, but McCarthy is being stonewalled by a group of conservative hardliners. Because the GOP holds only a narrow majority, those hardliners hold more influence in the conference and have already denied McCarthy the votes necessary to secure the gavel on initial rounds of balloting.

"The one thing that's clear is he doesn't have the votes. And so at some point as a conference we'll have to figure out who does and so I think every member is having that thought process right now," Donalds told CNN's Jake Tapper. All 19 GOP lawmakers who voted against McCarthy in the first round voted for Jordan in the second round. “Beyond the 19 or so Republicans who voted for Jim Jordan, how many will vote for him on the third ballot? House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy said he is not giving up his fight for speaker despite the fact 19 Republican members voted against him. A warning sign for Kevin McCarthy – conservative supporter Rep. Ken Buck says he believes the House GOP leader will eventually lose more backing if the voting drags out. Jordan, a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and four-time state champion in high school, worked as an assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994.
